Public Safety
Every Emeryville resident deserves to feel secure walking our greenways, shopping locally, and parking outside their home. Burglary and theft are constant concerns for residents, and violent crime is up year-over-year, but keeping our community safe doesn’t mean turning it into a surveillance state.
We need sensible, equitable, community-focused, law-enforcement-approved policies that protect public safety without eroding civil liberties:
- Resource-Backed, Community-Centered Patrols: Support our officers with the training, mental health resources, and competitive compensation needed to retain top quality staff who build real relationships with local residents and neighborhood groups.
- Targeted Technology with Strict Oversight: Any crime-prevention tools and technologies must serve as focused investigative aids, not blanket monitoring. I support strict data-retention caps, mandatory transparency audits, and clear protocols preventing data sharing with federal agencies or non-law-enforcement actors.
- Corporate & Commercial Safety Accountability: Large commercial property owners and major retail centers cannot shirk their own responsibilities. Rather than over-stretching city police resources to serve as default private security, major private properties must invest in their own trained on-site security, common-sense environmental design, and proactive crime prevention.
